  • Special features regarding teaching
Teaching has a strong research connection and an interdisciplinary link with other institutions of the university and the Heidelberg School of Education. Regularly offered subjects are complemented by current topics; the course planning takes into account the wishes of students. The degree course offers options both between modules as well as within the modules. Distinguishing features are diversity of method and good group sizes and tutor-to-student ratios (limited number of participants in seminars).
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
The proportion of English-language courses will be increased gradually. Visiting scholars are involved in teaching and research through their own lectures, lecture series, workshops and presentations. Incomings and outgoings are supported by the Erasmus team; the institute promotes the recognition of external credits from courses and work placements; there is an extensive own exchange programme in addition to the comprehensive offers of the university. The institute offers an international postgraduate programme (Taiwanese Executive Learning Programme).
  • Exchange universities for stay abroads
Sciences Po/Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, Frankreich; Università degli Studi di Bologna, Italien; University of Durham, Vereinigtes Königreich; Trinity College Dublin, Irland; Université de Lausanne, Schweiz; Rijks Universiteit Leiden, Niederlande; Karls-Universität Prag, Tschechien; Aarhus Universitet, Dänemark; İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, Türkei; Shanghai International Studies University, China
  • Support for founders
Students, alumni and staff of the University of Heidelberg receive support with setting up new businesses from the university’s Start-up Management. The university takes part in the Exist programme. Structures are in place for cooperation with successful spin-offs from the institute’s research areas.
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
All faculty rooms and spaces are accessible. There is an established practice at the institute for making reasonable adjustments to examination types and deadlines, and the student advice and counselling service for support and guidance. Support is provided, e.g. by separate supervisors and provision of a room that is equipped for adjusted examination types such as dictation.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
University certified as “family-friendly university”, service for families; KidS (Studying with children); Dual Career Service; Concierge Service; programme to promote early career female university teachers; Welcome Centre for international scientists, language courses and preparatory courses (Studienkolleg) for international students; faculty equal opportunity officer and equal opportunity initiative; accessible building, arrangements in place for reasonable adjustments; support for international students by the Erasmus office and two officers.
  • Other special features
Good and intensive cooperation between the student council and the institute. Numerous student initiatives supported by the institute (e.g. Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research, Forum for International Security Heidelberg, Federal Association for Security Policy in Higher Education, Network Policy Working Group); good learning and working conditions due to the limited number of participants and good facilities on the Bergheim campus. Links with companies and placement exchange of the institute; comprehensive evaluation system.
