    Course in all central areas of modern political science; Teaching and research are closely interlinked; Internationality (e.g. teaching in English, international guest speakers, many international partner universities); Comprehensive and application-oriented training in statistics and methods of empirical policy research (e.g. survey research, analysis official statistics); Interactive and innovative teaching methods, including e-learning; Practical occupational seminars with tutors with real-life experience (e.g. political journalism, market and opinion research)

    Internationalisation at home: Many courses are offered in English; in cooperation with the Department: There are separate courses for incomings; Long-term lectureships: Regular guest lecturers from abroad (i.e., almost every semester); Internationalisation abroad: Studying abroad for one to two semesters is possible at numerous partner universities within the framework of Erasmus; There are close international research collaborations, for example, as part of Jean Monnet initiatives; Currently under development: Teaching and research cooperation with Ottawa/Toronto, Canada.

    Institute and teaching buildings are accessible; for students with permanent health impairments there are arrangements and points of contact throughout the university to provide assistance, e.g. service office for accessible study (help with legal questions such as reasonable adjustments, hardship applications, extensions to time allowed for written examinations, resources including workspaces for blind students and those with vision impairment, portable amplifiers and screen readers); the institute has its own liaison officer for students with disabilities.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
    In 2017 the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz received for the fifth year in succession the "Total E-Quality” award, including the new "Add-On" for diversity. There are several central points of contact and officers directly in the departments to support members of the university who have special requirements. Facilities such as the career service office and the family service office also help to make the university an attractive place to study and work.
  • Other special features
    We cover the subject broadly (professorships for all "classic" areas plus "Politics and Economics" and empirical methods. Our dual-subject Bachelor's course (core/complimentary subject) provides numerous combinations, according to individual interests. We are internationally and research oriented, maintain exchange programmes with over 20 foreign partner universities, and offer part of our lectures and seminars in English. The Media City of Mainz and the European metropolitan Rhine-Main area offer diverse attractive opportunities for industrial placements.
