Special features regarding teachingIn-depth introduction including preparation course, introduction to methodology, introductory lectures in sub-fields (BA) and lecture series (MA). There are also numerous specialization options, including in sociology, and international guest lectures in all sub-disciplines. Research practicals and simulation games allow students to link theory with (research) practice. The aim of the teaching is the communication of content-based and methodological skills as well as the ability to work independently in accordance with scientific principles and to reflect critically on social contexts.

Special features regarding the international orientationWith a network of 73 international partner universities for student exchange and research projects with around 35 foreign partners, the department promotes diverse exchange opportunities in research and teaching. In addition to ERASMUS+ for exchange in Europe, there are partnerships with well-known universities in the USA and Canada. With regard to professional orientation, the department supports students to a great extent in preparing for work in international organisations, for example, through work placements, business games, workshops or meetings with alumni.

Support for foundersThe Unibator is the innovation incubator at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. It supports students, staff and alumni in implementing scientific knowledge and turning the resulting business ideas into marketable products and services. Founders complete an 18-month start-up programme, during which they aim to develop a validated and scaleable business model.

Characteristics of assistance to differently abled personsWhere mental health conditions are concerned, the student advice and counselling service works closely with the psychosocial counselling and “Accessible Study” offices. The student advice and counselling service in the department works with students who have health impairments to create individual curricula and development plans. Options are also made available for part-time study to assist students with organisation of their studies.

Characteristics of diversity advancementThe Institute for Political Science is highly committed to diversity in a particular way. This is reflected in the appointments policy and the measures taken to promote diversity among the students. In 2017 the proportion of female professors was 37%. At student level, around 55% of all graduates in 2017 were women. The range of courses and information offered in English is being extended on an ongoing basis. International scientific exchange is encouraged and promoted, for example through invitations for visiting lecturers and scientists. Goethe University strengthens diversity through its initiative “Goethe-UniversitätChancen=”
