  • Special features regarding teaching
    Teaching is structured in such a way that a professionally qualifying degree can be earned in the Bachelor's degree course. Projects and Bachelor's theses with professional relevance are carried out in industrial companies. In the Master's degree courses of the department, theoretical training is offered in more depth which qualifies students to pursue a doctorate. Master's theses are only carried out in university research institutes. When appointing professors, the department gives the highest priority to many years of professional experience and proven academic qualification.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    The department is preparing to introduce double degrees for all of its degree courses in cooperation with a partner university, the University of Massachusetts. It has been hiring professors for many years who also have teaching qualification in English. It has also relied on foreign visiting professors as guest lecturers since 2014, previously from the University of Wisconsin (USA) and the Universität Leoben (Austria). Doctorates are carried out in collaboration with Irish and American universities.

  • Special features regarding the equipment
    The faculty has laboratories and technical centres spanning more than 6,000 m². A new multifunctional laboratory was completed in 2015. Through cooperation with industry, up-to-date equipment, machines and systems are always available. The IT equipment covers the entire spectrum so that the best conditions are provided, also for research and teaching with virtual methods and processes. Specifically for the degree courses in Mechatronics, the facilities of the departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Information Engineering as well as Computer Science are also used, which creates even more possibilities.
  • Special features regarding research and development
    The ongoing research projects of the department are industry-oriented and cover a wide range of fields spanning Automotive Development, Production and Plastics Engineering as well as specialised topics such as Renewable Energies or Hybrid and Composite Materials. The research projects integrated in the Master's degree courses ensure that close links are actually established between research and teaching. Doctorates are successfully carried out in the department's Institute for Plastics Engineering.
  • Other special features
    Academics from different disciplines (engineers, physicists, polymer chemists) work in the department so that courses as well as research projects have an interdisciplinary character. The students therefore have the opportunity to analyse and understand the entire process chain from materials development through to the production. The Bachelor's degree courses are application-oriented and qualify students to work in the profession. The Master's degree courses can be studied either with a focus on research or application and qualify students to pursue doctorates. Cooperative doctorates are possible.
