Mechanical Engineering
Degree courses with details
Further information provided by the department
-
Special features regarding teachingThe department includes degree courses in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Industrial Design. There is also close cooperation with the department of Economics. Optimal conditions for interdisciplinary degree courses exist and interdisciplinary courses have long been a reality. In addition to the degree courses in Industrial Engineering and Mechatronic Systems Engineering with strong content in Mechanical Engineering, work is being done to establish closer cooperation with the Design degree courses.
-
Special features regarding the international orientationPartnerships exist primarily with higher education institutions in China, Jordan and Slovakia. These include, for example, the 2+2 project with China as well as a lecturer exchange. As the university in Germany responsible for the project with the German-Jordanian University (GJU) in Amman, Jordan, study visits and final theses of Jordanian students are mandatory and lecturers are exchanged.
-
Special features regarding the equipmentThe technical equipment is characterised by higher than average complexity and modernity. Manufacturing Engineering, Constructional Techniques: Machine tools, robotics (industry 4.0), assembly systems, production metrology, coordinate measuring machines, friction welding machines, finishing machines, design, calculation and programming tools. In particular, extensive finite elements environment; Composite Technologies: Systems for the production, processing, analysis and testing of fibre composite structures; Servo-hydraulic biaxial vibration testing machine. Preparation of a "model factory".
-
Special features regarding research and developmentResearch focuses are: Function Optimisation; Lightweight Construction and Hybrid Lightweight Construction; Renewable Resources; Fine Machining for Medical Products (Artificial Joints); Force-Controlled Manufacturing Processes (Friction-Welding, Finishing); Production-Relevant Measurement Technology (Optical Production Measurement Technology); Experiments in tribology; Alternative Energy. The strong practical relevance includes the development of a demonstrator or a product. Interdisciplinary collaboration both inside the department and with other departments is a unique feature.
-
Support for foundersThe department currently runs 4 ego. incubators designed to help students with the set-up of spin-offs: "Competence in Quality", "Medical Technology", "Friction Welding Industry 4.0", "Material Surfaces"; Supervision by scientific staff and professors; Infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment technology; Concept development within the team and support in all questions and concerns related to your own business ideas; Collaboration with other start-up programmes and further measures for academic business start-ups
-
Other special featuresHigh proportion of research; Right to offer cooperative doctorates; All degree courses are accredited and re-accredited; Very high practical component; Students work on research projects, tutor programme as part of their projects and beyond; Mentoring programme; Evaluation of teaching by students. As part of the re-accreditation due in 2019, the study programmes of the department will be revised and homogenised to an extent, with great emphasis being placed on more options and specialisations in the degree courses.

(ME)= Mechanical Engineering (IntDiscip)= very interdisciplinary and thus not classified;
As the ranking is done for the whole subject area, for the single "sub-subjects" it can happen that not all rank groups are represented in all criteria.
