  • Special features regarding teaching
    Teaching in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the HS Schmalkalden is characterised by intensive, individual student support, dedicated teaching staff, a mature curriculum and a strong focus on practice. All course teaching takes place in modern and generously equipped laboratories, seminar rooms and lecture theatres. Practical laboratory work and laboratory demonstrations are integrated into the course from the very first semester. The conditions are ideal for gaining early entry to a career as an engineer. 95% of graduates receive a permanent position in the private sector right after their studies.

  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    For many years, the faculty of Mechanical Engineering has offered an English-language course programme that is used by foreign guest students as well as regular mechanical engineering students. 5-6 Engl. courses per semester totalling approx. 30 credit points. For students in the Bachelor's degree courses, it is possible to obtain a double degree in a 2-semester stay abroad. Every year, the faculty organises an international week where foreign lecturers hold guest lectures for students in the faculty offer.

  • Special features regarding the equipment
    The faculty for Mechanical Engineering has more than 20 laboratories where Engineering training and research can be carried out at the highest level. Particularly worthy of mention are the well-equipped computer lab with rapid prototyping system, the laboratory for combustion power machines with gas turbine system and diesel engine test bench, the Plastics Laboratory with several experimental injection moulding machines, the newly designed Laboratory for Renewable Raw Materials or the Laboratory for Robotics and Automation Engineering with several industrial robots.
  • Special features regarding research and development
    The mechanical engineering faculty currently has four key research areas: Applied plastics technology, renewable energy and renewable raw materials, material and surface technology and tool and mould making for wood-based materials. Master's students can prepare their project work in the research team. The laboratories also offer foreign guest students the possibility of academic project work.

  • Other special features
    To ensure that new students get off to a good start to their studies, special value is attached to intensive guidance during the initial study phase. The Bachelor's degree course starts with a three-week preparatory course in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. During the ongoing semester, there are learning groups supervised and organised by teaching staff in addition to the regular courses. During the first two semesters, preliminary examinations are given in key subjects to prepare students effectively for the semester examinations.
