Special features regarding teachingThe department has a broad study portfolio based on classical education in engineering and the natural sciences in which further development of new offers is based on the principle of sustainability. Courses are measured against economic needs and the socially necessary requirements; This is offered in the interest of training students for career opportunities. The KOMPASS orientation semester makes it easier to get started. We attach great importance to a cooperative and dialogue-oriented teaching and learning environment in small groups.
-
Special features regarding the international orientationStudents are motivated to complete a semester abroad; An individual ‘learning agreement’ is concluded with this in mind. There are many universities to choose from within the Erasmus network. Active use is made of partnerships with international institutions of higher education (e.g. excursions, individual exchanges, final theses). English-language modules are offered; there is an English-language degree course (with another in preparation). Examinations can be taken in German or English. Theses can be submitted in English.
-
Special features regarding the equipmentTeaching takes place in renovated buildings and rooms with state-of-the-art media technology as well as laboratories that are always equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The library is equipped with extensive E-Media and access to national and international databases, facilitating extensive research in all areas. Studies are organised via the university information system with computer support. E-Learning platforms such as ILIAS are in wide use in instruction. Online instruction is always expanding. WiFi is available throughout the entire campus.
-
Special features regarding research and developmentThe department of Engineering and Natural Sciences is characterised by intensive research activities and a high level of third-party funding. In the field of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, key areas include process engineering of raw material conversion, recycling, biological methods, chemical and physical analysis as well as chemistry and plastics engineering. Doctoral theses are repeatedly created through doctoral procedures (including cooperative ones). The university has several affiliated institutes, e.g. ‘Institut für Polymerforschung’ or ‘Polymer Service GmbH Merseburg’
-
Other special featuresThe university campus is embedded in a wealth of surrounding green areas, permitting a calm and focussed approach to one’s studies. Student dormitories are located directly on campus, as are sports facilities, theatre and cinema.; as well as student clubs or student church groups. Merseburg is a pleasant and quiet city, with 35,000 inhabitants and affordable housing. The major cities of Leipzig and Halle are nearby. In addition to technical courses of study, the university also offers courses in the social sciences, cultural studies, economics and information science. This ensures a diverse student body.
