Special features regarding teachingThe teaching in Braunschweig follows the Braunschweig model and is characterised by diversity in both the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses. Students have a good range of options from the very start. There are no compulsory subjects in the Master's course, and the study profile can be individually compiled, for example from 21 in-depth study areas in Civil Engineering. The teaching staff are available to help students with questions during regular consultation hours.
-
Special features regarding the international orientationThe department has a double degree programme with the University of Rhode Island, in which the students can obtain the German and American Master's degree at the same time. DAAD-funded scholarship places are available for this. An international coordinator is permanently available to students as a contact person. Credits earned abroad are normally transferred. International coursework and theses are possible. There is a buddy programme.
-
Exchange universities for stay abroadsUniversity of Rhode Island, Kingston, USA; NTNU Trondheim, Norwegen; Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spanien; Universidad de Granada, Spanien; Universidade de Lisboa, Lissabon, Portugal; Universitá degli Studi di Pisa, Italien; Grenoble INP, Frankreich; Oulun Yliopisto, Oulu, Finnland; Technische Univer.sität Delft, Niederlande; National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei City, Taiwan.
-
Special features regarding the equipmentThe department has a large number of laboratories, workshops and experimental facilities at a high scientific level. Examples of these include the LWI's hydraulic engineering hall, the resonance pulser of the Institute for Steelwork, extensive testing equipment of the Institute of Building Materials, Concrete Structures and Fire Protection as well as the asphalt lab of the Institute of Highway Engineering. A parallel cluster is available for modelling. The facilities also include a railway operation simulator. In principle, there are testing areas with technical equipment available in almost every institute.
-
Special features regarding research activitiesIn the department, there are currently two Research Training Groups funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG): "Social Cars" and "Models for the Constitutional Evolution During Aging of Materials and Structures". Professors are involved in collaborative research areas. Many of the department's institutes are active in the university's key areas of research – "City of the future" and "Mobility". A centre for fire research has been founded.
-
Support for foundersCourses of the Chair for Entrepreneurship can be taken as part of the key qualifications (Bachelor). In cooperation with the technology transfer centre at the TU Braunschweig, the topic of business start-ups is explained in various courses. In the Master’s, the topic of start-ups is implied, depending on the specialisation selected.
-
Other special featuresThe course in Industrial Engineering/Construction includes an area of integration. At this interface between Civil Engineering and Economics, students address the requirements and interactions of these two fields in a targeted manner. In this way, they learn to review the processes in Civil Engineering in terms of technology and economics, and to use this basis to work through inter-disciplinary problems.
