Special features regarding teachingA personal profile is formed by selecting a technically-oriented branch of study and a Business Administration specialisation, along with required elective subjects; application-oriented teaching with laboratory sessions, exercises, excursions and simulation games; practical team projects; use of ultra-modern laboratories in the areas of Computer Science, Automation Engineering and Renewable Energies; option to study abroad at partner universities; small groups with individual support; Tutorials; Compulsory practical semester at companies/organisations generally as preparation for the Bachelor's thesis.
Special features regarding the international orientationThe university has partnerships with 74 universities in 33 countries (primarily in Europe). The exchange and recognition of modules is promoted. The Industrial Engineering programme at the AI department offers two dual-degree options: via CDHAW with Tongji University; Shanghai; China and via DHIk with Tec de Monterrey; Mexico. The international Industrial Engineering programme includes English-taught modules and a compulsory semester abroad. The Bachelor work placement and the Master’s thesis can be completed abroad.
Special features regarding the equipmentLaboratories in Physics and Electrical and Electronic Engineering to consolidate basic knowledge; Ultra-modern, application-oriented laboratories in the field of Renewable Energy Sources for Wind Energy, Solar Thermal Energy, Photovoltaics, Biomass, and Energy Storage combined in a virtual power station (German Research Foundation, major instrumentation); Ultra-modern, application-oriented Automation Engineering laboratories for Sensor Engineering/Actuator Engineering, Industrial Robots, Motive Power Engineering, linked by Process Control Engineering; application-oriented Computer Science laboratories with specialisation in Database Systems and Business Process Automation with ERP systems.
Special features regarding research and developmentA variety of application-oriented research and development projects are carried out by the course teachers, generally with companies (e.g. Information and Communication Technology; Energy Efficiency, Environmental Engineering; Industry 4.0; see Research Report); Students can participate as academic assistants or within team projects, laboratory equipment for research and development projects is also used in teaching, labs can be used also for Master’s thesis, R&D work by students is supported as groundwork for setting up a business; For the Master’s programme: R&D project with 15 ECTS is part of the curriculum.

Support for foundersStart-ups are supported through various session formats: Sessions/workshops on the development of ideas and business concepts; Formats designed to bring together students of technical disciplines and business administrators as well as other disciplines. Once a year, a 3-day event – Innovation Days – is organised where all necessary steps are explained and presented by experts, from idea generation to business plan. Students and external experts manage an EGO Summer Academy for pupils.
Characteristics of assistance to differently abled personsThe disabilities representative of the university is available to students who need advice. There are exam simplifications and/or support, such as exam time extensions. One exam mode may be replaced by another; Possibility to rest during breaks or take the exam in a separate room.
Characteristics of diversity advancementThe contact points are the equality representatives of the university and department. The aim is to attract more female students and support the department members (incl. Students). Work placements and research weeks are offered as part of advertising. The equality representative is a member of the faculty council and the appointment committees, and is also involved in the conferment of doctorates. There are various projects in support of equality and continuing education events.
Other special featuresThe degree course in Industrial Engineering enables students to develop their own individual profile in accordance with their interests and admission requirements; this is supported by small study groups. In the international programme, the student's profile is shaped at a partner university so that technical and cross-cultural interests can be closely linked to one another. Practical requirements are continually taken into account by the Industrial Engineering advisory board when designing the courses on offer.
