  • Special features regarding teaching
    The Mechanical Engineering course has been associated with the Schmalkalden campus for over 100 years. The Industrial Engineering course also benefits from this vast experience. An important part of the course is the practical phases – beginning with the pre-study work placement, then on to an Engineering placement and finally, completion of a Bachelor's thesis in a company. The basic training in Engineering is particularly intensive – Technical Mechanics, Construction, Engineering Mathematics and Physics. The Business Administration component of the course is also markedly practice-related.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    The Faculty organises an annual International Engineering Week. International partners present on specific, technically-oriented topics. The Faculty has several dual-degree programmes, which are also open to Economic Sciences students. The English-taught courses of the Faculty comprise courses of approximately 50 ECTS.
  • Special features regarding the equipment
    The IT and laboratory equipment in the higher education institution is outstanding. WiFi is available across the campus. There are 3 computer rooms, each with 10 workstations, available to students of the Industrial Engineering course and these can be used outside teaching hours. All teaching rooms are equipped with the very latest presentation technology. The technical equipment in the laboratories is high quality and modern. There are test facilities available for Machine Tools, Combustion Engineering, Rapid Prototyping, Robotics, Welding Technology and Plastics Engineering.
  • Special features regarding research and development
    Research in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is not geared towards a specific degree course. There are currently three key areas: Applied plastics technology and injection moulding tools, mechanical properties of wood laminate and moulding tools, renewable raw materials and renewable energies; students and graduates of all degree programs in the faculty are active in the main research areas. Students get to grips with the research focuses as part of their project work and final theses.
  • Support for founders
    The last semester of the programme includes a module on “Business Start-Ups and Financing” that specifically simulates the establishment of a company. The course is supported and organised, amongst others, by members of the external technology and incubator centre of the district.
