Special features regarding teachingThe department offers teaching oriented around the latest findings which, in addition to traditional teaching in the lecture theatre (both with boards and modern media), uses modern teaching concepts like inverted classrooms or e-Learning.

Special features regarding the international orientationThe department has a high percentage of international academic teaching staff and students. Parts of the lectures and the entire Master's degree course in Water Science are taught in English. International experts who are guests of the university regularly offer additional seminars and lectures, especially for advanced Master's students and doctoral candidates (e.g. as part of the annual Werdelmann Lecture or of the graduate college "Supramolecular Chemistry in Proteins").

Characteristics of diversity advancementAs the first German university with its own vice-president for diversity management, a diversity concept was developed for the university early on that spans a wide range of initiatives to promote diversity at all levels. Diversity aspects are an important part of the agreements on objectives and performance between the department and the principal’s office. One of the department's missions is to encourage the advancement of women in top academic and business positions. To this end, e.g. special mentoring, coaching programmes and workshops are offered.
