    The Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Economics have a clear focus on empirical-quantitative aspects as well as empirical economic research with practical relevance. The Bachelor's programme is characterised by a well-structured education in the key competences of the subject and a broad range of options for specialisation studies and is closely integrated with the Business Administration programme. The Master's programmes are characterised by a clear focus on research.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    The department encourages stays abroad on the basis of a transparent system for recognising credits. In addition, two bilingual programmes are available: Business Administration – Energy and Finance and Health Economics.

  • Special features regarding the equipment
    E-campus (WiFi throughout the whole campus); virtual PC and software pool with 400 workstations; extensive PC workrooms and PC teaching and examination rooms with 200 workstations; faculty has its own IT service centre; free and cost-effective software for students; freedom to use the software you need; Essener Labor für Experimentelle Wirtschaftsforschung (Essen Laboratory for Experimental Economic Research); good library with long opening hours.

    Economic research in Essen is predominantly focused on empirical research. The department cooperates closely with the RWI research institute in Essen via the Centre for Health Economic Research (CINCH). With the Essen Laboratory for Experimental Economic Research (elfe), the department has well-equipped experimental laboratory of research into economic interaction and communication.
  • Research topics reflected in teaching
    Analysis of strategic decisions in sports, price discrimination in imperfect competition, data mining, statistical learning, machine learning, current developments in experimental economics, theory of optimal currency areas, unconventional monetary policies in industrial countries, EU governance, inequality and poverty, social security and pensions, migration and labour market, economic effects of free-trade agreements ​with TTIP and TPP serving as examples, methods of efficiency analysis: Efficiency of health care systems and education systems.

  • Support for founders
    The University of Duisburg-Essen has combined the numerous measures in the IDE competence centre for innovation and start-ups. In addition, the chair for e-business and e-entrepreneurship pursues a combination of training and start-up promotion in e-business. Thus it is the aim to help to intensify the use of digital business processes through the courses offered, while also focusing on intensifying start-up promotion in the net economy.
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
    The University of Duisburg-Essen has set up a counselling centre for the inclusion of people with disabilities and chronic illness. A separate inclusivity and disabilities portal is available for information, counselling and support.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
    The University of Duisburg-Essen established the first vice-rector for diversity management in Germany back in October 2008. Diversity management is anchored in the guidelines of the UDE and an integral part of the university's development planning. Through such programmes as ProSALAMANDER and ProDiversity, as well as projects on equality in education, the department is actively involved in promoting diversity.
