  • Special features regarding teaching
As a full department of German studies, we offer research-oriented instruction in all areas and begin with instruction in all the relevant fundamentals. Students can specialise in a specific subject at the end of their B.A. Further specialisation is possible during the Master’s programme, as we offer Master’s degree courses in all subjects. However, it is also possible to continue studies as part of a full-fledged German studies curriculum under the Master’s degree programme in ‘German philology’. As a research-driven department of German studies, we involve students in research as early as possible while at the same time promoting the acquisition of skills relevant to future occupations.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
Among other things, we cooperate closely with cooperation partners abroad within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. We also cooperate closely with China through our Master´s degree programmes at IKG. In addition, we work closely with a large number of partners abroad, particularly in the field of research.
  • Special features regarding the equipment
We promote the acquisition of digital skills throughout the university.
  • Special features regarding research activities
We have total of third-party funds in the range of about EUR 1.5 million per year. The following projects are particularly relevant: Research project on the development of the Göttingen Grass Archive: Günter Grass as book designer (funded by the Volkswagen Foundation); Focus programme: Early modern translation cultures; The research training group on Form-meaning mismatches; External subproject G2 ‘vita mixta. On the laicisation of a spiritual concept’ in SFB 1015 ‘Leisure’ at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg
  • Support for founders
There is a special unit for start-up guidance in the Philosophy Department.
  • Other special features
Due to the broad orientation of our courses of study, we offer the complete range of courses of study in Germanic studies, from the classical subjects of German Studies to special Master’s courses such as German as a foreign language or Comparative Studies. Our research strength is also reflected in the teaching we provide.
