Special features regarding the international orientationThe psychology department has many international links. Courses in English are offered each semester. Visiting researchers are recruited from abroad who hold research-based courses or guest lectures in English. A semester abroad or a practical abroad are easy to integrate into the degree course. Most academic achievements gained abroad are recognised. Department staff for international coordination regularly conclude new cooperation agreements with international universities.

Special features regarding the equipmentThe Psychology Department is characterised by very good and extensive technical equipment. It has its own PC room with relevant software, a laboratory for Clinical Psychophysiology at the Otto Selz Institute, several Cognitive and Social Psychology experimental rooms with PC workstations, laboratory for Clinical Psychophysiology, UB Area A3 with a psychological test archive ("Testothek"), multi-media equipment in all lecture theatres and seminar rooms, full WLAN coverage on campus, collaboration with the Central Institute of Mental Health (and the FMRT).

Special features regarding research activitiesResearch on Cognitive and Social Psychology (memory, knowledge, thought, decision-making, perception, changes of opinion, judgement, stereotypes, mathematical modelling); Clinical Psychology (emotional aspects of psychopathology, perception of emotional visual and auditory stimuli); Occupational and Organisational Psychology (stress, recovery, health, proactivity, creativity, informal learning); Consumer Psychology (affective and cognitive behavioural reactions to products and brands) as well as Educational Psychology (cognitive/motivational processes in learning).

Support for foundersThe University of Mannheim offers a very good setting for students interested in starting a business. The field of business administration has a very broad base and explicitly extends to business start-ups. Supplemental to this, the Institute for SME Research conducts research on the topic of business start-ups and offers consulting with regard to start-ups as well. In addition, there are several student initiatives concerned with the topic of start-ups.

Other special featuresAfter completing Variant II of the Bachelor’s programme, students have the option of applying at the University of Mannheim for a course of study towards the Master’s degree in preparation for licensing as a psychotherapist. These student services should also be emphasised: Professional degree-programme management and subject-specific student advice, international coordination, departmental internship office (support and guidance during the internship search and embarking on career as well as for application documents); Students are involved in ongoing research projects.
