Special features regarding teachingSpecial features include a wide range of courses in literature and cultural studies (English, American & Canadian studies, medieval studies) and linguistics with a focus on use-oriented linguistics, including current quantitative methods. Teaching at the institute is interdisciplinary. A practical semester ensures the practical relevance of the teacher training course. BA and MA students can choose their own main areas of study. The degree course is taught in English. Teaching is mostly in the form of seminars.
Special features regarding the international orientationStudents are supported during their stay abroad through the international partnerships of the university. Academic achievements are recognised via learning agreements. BA students have the option of doing internships abroad. Teacher training students can do their practical semester abroad. Half of all Master's students come from abroad.

Special features regarding the equipmentAs well as the usual equipment in all rooms with audio and video technology and its use in teaching, it is also important to mention the Moodle-based learning platform "WordWise", which has been specially modified for the department. "WordWise" is not only used for structuring the semester programme and providing teaching materials, but also for independent group and project work.
Special features regarding research activitiesThe institute is involved in interdisciplinary projects within the university - e.g. the "Modell Romantik" graduate college - as well as in international research projects.
