  • Special features regarding teaching
Computer Science at KIT offers more than 250 courses per semester; this ensures that students can deepen and specialise their knowledge following a solid basic education in theoretical, technical and practical Computer Science as well as Mathematics in almost any way depending on their interests and inclinations. The Master’s course in computer science gives students the opportunity to specialise in one of currently ten study profiles and to have these specialisations certified (e.g. IT security, artificial intelligence, robotics etc.).
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
The KIT Faculty of Computer Science offers double Master’s degrees with two elite universities in France (Grenoble/Rennes) as well as Erasmus student exchanges across a range of locations. KIT's InterACT scholarship programme enables students to complete their theses at top quality locations around the world (e.g., USA, China, Tokyo, etc.), providing financial support and intensive support locally and through KIT.
  • Exchange universities for stay abroads
Finnland, Aalto University School of Science; Frankreich, Grenoble - Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble mit ENSIMAG; Irland, University College Cork; Norwegen, Norges Teknsik-Naturvitenskapelige Universitet (NTNU); Portugal, Universidade de Lisboa; Schweden, Stockholm - KTH Royal Institute of Technology; Schweden, Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg; Schweiz, Universität Zürich; Spanien, Universidad de Cádiz; Spanien, UPC Barcelona
  • Special features regarding the equipment
Outstanding computing equipment; Campus WiFi; 2 multimedia lecture halls; All seminar rooms with multimedia technology; can also be used as group study rooms; 1 large and 4 small computer pool rooms (approximately 100 seats) in addition to the computer centre pool rooms; Departmental library (open until 10 p.m., approximately 25,000 books, group study rooms, WiFi and power at the workplace); 24h KIT central library; IBM Z10 mainframe; Industrial robotics laboratories, humanoid robot laboratories; (Precision) mechanics and electronics workshops (circuit board production); Full access to online publication databases.
  • Support for founders
The third mission of KIT is innovation. A separate "Innovation management" service unit supports company start-ups by staff members and students with professional management, infrastructure, advice, training, assistance with patent applications and licensing etc. KIT offers corresponding courses in the field of entrepreneurship. The Department of Informatics has already helped many spin-offs on the road to business success through the provision of infrastructure.
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
“Informatikstudium für Blinde” is a pilot project for blind students in computer science that has been running for 30 years and has very successfully evolved into the “Study Centre for the Visually Impaired” (SZS) for students of all disciplines. The SZS has inspired many similar organisations worldwide. Students with vision impairment are prepared for life on campus in special orientation stages and with the help of mentors, and receive individual assistance in the form of accessible learning materials and examinations.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
Because the specialist language of informatics is English, foreign students and staff members have few difficulties. Special integration measures have not been necessary to date. There are currently more than 20% foreign students from over 50 countries of origin with the most diverse cultures active in Informatics, and this trend continues among the core staff. Chinese students account for the largest contingent, followed by students from Turkey.
  • Other special features
Founded in 1972, the Faculty of Computer Science at KIT was the first in Germany and, with almost 40 professors and over 300 academic staff, is one of the largest. For many years, the faculty has been ranked first in the graduate ranking of the Wirtschaftswoche magazine. It has seen more than 6,000 Diplom students graduate and awarded more than 1,100 doctoral degrees. Over 200 graduates have already gone on to become professors. The freshers are supported by student tutors in the first semesters of the mandatory programme. The course offering is extremely diverse and of high quality.
