Special features regarding teachingThe teaching at the Department of Physics at the University of Marburg is characterised by the proximity to research, by an excellent supervision ratio and by many open offers from students for students. Good networking with the departments of biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science as well as psychology, among others, promotes active degree across subject boundaries. This enables students to set a wide range of focal points.
Exchange universities for stay abroadsGöteborgs Universitet, Schweden; Université Bordeaux, Frankreich; University College Cork, Irland; Sveuciliste Josipa Jurja Strossmayera u Osijeku, Osijek, Kroatien; Univerza v Mariboru, Maribor, Slowenien; Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, Ankara, Turkei; Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi, Rize, Turkei; Budapesti Muszaki es Gazdasag tudomanyi Egyetem, Budapest, Ungarn
Special features regarding the equipmentThere is a wide range of top-quality research equipment or large-scale equipment. Amongst these: Scanning and transmission electron microscope with CS correction, X-ray diffractometer, femtosecond laser system with optical parametric oscillator, photoelectron spectrometer of the highest resolution, molecular beam and MOVPE epitaxy equipment as well as various computer clusters. In addition, the faculty has an excellently equipped mechanical precision workshop and an innovative electronics laboratory.
Special features regarding research activitiesThe faculty is involved in national, international and also interdisciplinary research. These include solid state physics in many forms (semiconductors, heterostructures, nanophysics, optoelectronics, molecular solids, magnetic properties as well as surfaces and interfaces), neurophysics as well as classical dynamics with turbulence or granular media. More applied research can be found in the fields of: theoretical microbiology, biophysics, development of highly efficient solar cells, development of new laser concepts.
Support for foundersThe department has practical experience with business start-ups by members who have taken this step. Based at the university, there is the Marburg Institute for Innovation Research and Start-up Promotion and in the Marburg University Research Academy twice a year in the context of the promotion of technology transfer workshops and assistance in the start-up phase of companies. The registration and evaluation of patents is facilitated by the TransMIT Gesellschaft (GmbH), with the University of Marburg being one of the shareholders.
Other special featuresThe Department of Physics is centrally located in the old town of Marburg. Not only the city, but also the department is "small". This is a big plus, as it allows for an excellent mentoring relationship and makes it easy to get in touch with faculty and fellow students. The distances are short and the close cooperation with e.g. the Centre for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO), the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Terrestrial Microbiology and the Scientific Centre for Materials Science (WZMW) enables students to experience research at the highest level.
