  • Special features regarding teaching
    The field of mathematics can be studied in its entirety. Four fields of study are available: Mathematics 80, Technomathematics, Mathematics of Economics, Mathematics of Data Science and Digitalisation. This fourth field of study is dedicated to the topics of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Theses are written both in a basic research-oriented manner and in cooperation with companies in the automotive industry, logistics, software companies in the field of artificial intelligence, with banks and insurance companies, or with other disciplines.

    Uni Lund, Schweden; Uni Linköping, Schweden; Uni Umeå, Schweden; Uni West-Böhmen in Pilsen, Tschechien; Uni Bordeaux, Frankreich; University of Southern Denmark, Dänemark; Yildiz Technical University, Türkei
  • Special features regarding the equipment
    Three PC pools with 52 PCs; several laptops for loan to students; student licenses for mathematical software; LaTeX with LaTeX service including LaTeX courses; server services are provided for students as needed; Windows and Linux systems are supported; user assistance and installation assistance; technical assistance for theses; provision of projection equipment, technical advice is provided; plenty of blackboard space in the lecture halls; very modern and very well equipped library; extensive access to electronic journals; didactics cabinet.
  • Special features regarding research activities
    Research focus and areas are: Analysis and numerics of partial differential equations, optimal discrete structures and algorithms, stochastics, algebra and number theory, didactics of mathematics. In some areas, such as Mathematical Optimisation and Numerical Mathematics, there are extensive third-party funded projects with strong practical relevance, for example in the field of Machine Learning with applications in handwriting recognition or also real-time control of fusion reactors, in long-term cooperation with a regional software company.
  • Support for founders
    Participation in the central programme of the University of Rostock on business start-ups.
  • Other special features
    The institute is involved extensively in the promotion of pupils who are interested in Mathematics. In particular, for many years there have been projects for Mathematics study groups and weekend courses organised by the Mathematics association Rho e.V. It has a central position in pupil competitions, especially the Mathematics Olympics.
