Further information provided by the department

  • Special features regarding teaching
Research and teaching of computer science at RWTH Aachen University are theoretically sound and equally application-oriented. The training offers top-class scientific qualification with practical relevance from the very beginning. An international environment and multicultural diversity contribute to a stimulating learning atmosphere. Close contacts to partner universities, research institutions and cooperation partners provide our students with the opportunity to build networks during their studies and to gain national and international study and professional experience.
  • Exchange universities for stay abroads
Imperial College London, Großbritannien; École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Schweiz; Aalto University Helsinki, Finnland; VU Amsterdam, Niederlande; Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spanien; Politecnico di Milano, Italien; Tsinghua University, China; Seoul National University, Korea; Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA; University of British Columbia, Kanada
  • Special features regarding the equipment
The IT Centre generally provides services in the areas of communication (e.g. WiFi, e-mail), security and digital teaching services (Moodle, RWTHonline, RWTHApp, O365). It also offers students the use of the university's own HPC cluster, various IT courses and central advice on all the IT Centre's services (also via chat and social media). In addition, the Computer Science Department operates an open Fab(rication) Lab(oratory) under the direction of the Media Computing Group, the virtual reality installation aixCAVE as well as the student laboratory "infoSphere".
  • Special features regarding research activities
More than 30 research groups carry out a wide range of research activities in theoretical as well as practical and technical computer science, which are both international and interdisciplinary in nature. There are close cooperations e.g. with the Fraunhofer FIT and the FZ Jülich. Computer Science is extensively involved in the Cluster of Excellence "Internet of Production" and has also been awarded six ERC grants. In addition to a Leibniz Prize and an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, it has numerous achievements to its credit, including Google Faculty Research Awards.
  • Support for founders
The computer science department works closely with the RWTH's business incubator. In addition, the Computer Science Department has recently launched its own Startup Advisor to support start-ups in the field of computer science. The proximity to the local industry (Regina e.V.- Regionaler Industrieclub Informatik Aachen) promotes the exchange with existing companies, e.g. by IT tours. In some cases, start-up-relevant content is even anchored in teaching, e.g. in the High-Tech Entrepreneurship Lab.
  • Other special features
The Bachelor of Computer Science offers a very comprehensive mentoring programme to help ease the transition into the programme. The close contact with the computer science student council enables a good exchange of information on matters of concern to the student body. Through the Regina e.V. (Regionaler Industrieclub Informatik Aachen) a direct connection to the local industry is given. Due to manifold contacts within the RWTH, computer science works and researches in a strongly interdisciplinary way. The lecture series "What is Computer Science?" offers interesting insights into different facets of computer science.
