  • Special features regarding teaching
Pilot department of the TUK in the competition "Excellent Teaching" of the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany; long tradition to ensure the quality of degree and teaching, teaching award of the state 2016 and 2020 to lecturers of the department; distance learning programme for early entry into physics degree; unique nationwide: B.Sc. and M.Sc. TechnoPhysics = a real 50/50 combination of physics and mechanical engineering; attractive, intensively supervised practical courses; close integration of teaching and didactic research with establishment and evaluation of new teaching-learning formats; open door policy of the lecturers for students.
  • Exchange universities for stay abroads
Univ. Grenoble, Frankreich; Univ. Louis Pasteur, Frankreich; Univ. Florenz, Italien; Univ. Linköping, Schweden; Univ. Granada, Spanien; Univ. Santiago de Compostela, Spanien
  • Special features regarding the equipment
Outstanding equipment thanks to highly successful acquisition of third-party funding and participation in 5 special research areas; examples of large-scale equipment in the faculty are Focused Ion Beam Microscopy/Lithography (FIB), Normal Incidence Photoemission Electron Microscope (NI-PEEM), Mott-Detector Spin- and Angle Resolved UPS System, Magnetron Sputter Coater. Affiliated to the Physics faculty are: the Institute for Surface and Thin Film Analysis (IFOS), the Nano Structuring Center (NSC) as technology centre.
  • Special features regarding research activities
The participation of the faculty in 4 DFG Collaborative Research Centres allows a very good equipment and an early involvement in focused research projects in pioneering areas of modern physics. This includes, for example, concepts for new spin-based computer logics, basic research on Quantum Optics and Ultra Cold Quantum Systems, but also modern Laser and Surface Physics for medicine. In 2021, the new research building Laboratory for Advanced Spin Engineering will be opened. Close cooperation exists with the DFKI, the FhG Institute ITWM.
  • Support for founders
In order to provide optimal support for business start-ups, the "Gründungsservice: STARTUP TU YOU" was founded. Here, a platform is provided that creates the framework for the development of new business models and start-up ideas and permanently expands activities to promote technology and growth-oriented start-ups. In addition, current and former members of the faculty who have already successfully founded a company themselves are on hand to offer advice and support to their young colleagues.
  • Other special features
Students can contribute to shaping developments in the Department of Physics through their studies and beyond; student representatives are not only represented in decision-making processes with regard to teaching (e.g. new appointments, establishment of new courses) but are also listened to as partners; open-door policy of professors for the needs of students.
