  • Special features regarding teaching
    Physics is a pilot subject area of the TU Kaiserslautern within the scope of the "Excellent Teaching" competition held by the Donors’ Association for German Science (Stifterverband). Attractive and intensively supervised practicals are praised highly by students; FiPS - Distance learning programme for early commencement of Physics studies by school students; close integration of teaching and didactic research: Establishment and evaluation of new teaching-learning forms such as video analysis tasks in experimental physics; teaching quality assurance system based on lecture surveys, which have been established for 20 years.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    The Master’s in Advanced Quantum Physics is explicitly an exclusively English-language study programme. On the one hand, prospective German students are to be prepared for a stay abroad or professional activity abroad through English-language classes. On the other hand, international students, who are an important asset to the research and study culture on the campus of the TUK, are also be recruited to study at the TUK. In addition, structured programmes for stays abroad are provided for students.

  • Special features regarding the equipment
    Outstanding equipment as a result of successful acquisition of third-party funding and participation in 5 special research areas; Examples of large-scale equipment in the department are Focused Ion Beam Microscopy/Lithography (FIB), Normal Incidence Photoemission Electron Microscope (NI-PEEM), Mott-Detector Spin- and Angle Resolved UPS System, Magnetron Sputter Coater. Affiliated to the Physics faculty are: the Institute for Surface and Thin Film Analysis (IFOS), the Nano Structuring Center (NSC) as technology centre and the TeraTec project group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measuring Techniques (IPM) in Freiburg.
  • Support for founders
    In order to give the best possible support to business start-ups, a start-up service “STARTUP TU YOU“ was launched at TUK. It offers a platform on which to develop new business models and start-up ideas and is permanently expanding with activities to promote technology-oriented and growth-oriented start-ups. Present and former staff members of the faculty who themselves have successfully set up their own business are also available to provide advice and guidance to their young colleagues.
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
    The department offers an individual advisory service that works with the student to find a suitable solution.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
    The department offers different services to appeal to different target groups. For example, “Girls Day” is designed especially for female school students, and the Advanced Quantum Physics degree programme is particularly for international students. There is also a regular meeting on gender, and a women’s mentoring programme. There was recently a visiting professorship in gender to help ensure that the university is always attuned to developments in the gender and diversity field. An equal opportunity plan is to ensure in future that awareness of these important issues remains in the long term.

    Students can contribute to shaping developments in the Department of Physics through their studies and beyond; Student representatives are not only represented in decision-making processes with regard to teaching (e.g. new appointments, establishment of new courses) but are also listened to; open-door policy of professors for the needs of students
