Further information provided by the department

  • Special features regarding teaching
In the learning centres, students are given support by staff and student tutors. The bachelor's degree in mathematics and technical mathematics also includes a "mathematics practical" with practice-oriented project work; in addition, the minor subject or the technical focus can be greatly expanded. As part of the master’s degree, a focus area is organised each year with individual courses, which means that students are introduced to an area of research in these coordinated courses. Teacher training courses include everything from special needs education to teaching at grammar schools and comprehensive schools

  • Special features regarding the international orientation
International guest lecturers support the respective Master’s key areas.
  • Special features regarding the equipment
Three pool rooms offer a total of 51 Fujitsu Esprimo P420 workstations. One pool room gas 25 Linux workstations, two pool rooms 15 and 11 Windows 7 PCs. All systems have Intel I3 processors (4th generation), 8GB main memory, SSD hard disks and 24'' TFT monitors, which are managed by the institute’s computer staff. For computer-based classes, in addition to various Mathematics software such as MupadMatlab, Mathematica etc., the current version of LaTeX environments, compilers and libraries are available. The Windows pool rooms have an interactive classroom management system.
  • Website with further information on research activities
  • Support for founders
The “TecUP” technology and start-up centre at the University of Paderborn supports new business ventures across all disciplines (e.g. with lecture series and certificates)
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
In accordance with the examination regulations, reasonable adjustments are arranged by the examination board. Advisory services are also available across the faculties, see https://zsb.uni-paderborn.de/studium-mit-beeintraechtigung/
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
Promoting and supporting diversity is part of the faculty plan for the advancement of women. Besides events for female school students, mentoring is also possible for female students (PerspektiveM). FiMINT is a programme designed for networking among women scientists. On 22 November 2005, the University of Paderborn was the first university in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to be awarded the basic certificate for the “family-friendly university audit”. In particular, there are various childcare options available.
  • Other special features
Every year, the institute holds the Weierstraß lecture, to which high-ranking Mathematicians are invited. The series is named after Karl Weierstraß, who, in 1834, obtained his school leaving certificate from the Theodorianum grammar school in Paderborn "primus omnium" (the best in the year).
