Special features regarding teachingThe degree in Physics in Paderborn is characterised by an innovative laboratory practical, amongst other things. The aim of this multi-award-winning concept is for the students to learn scientific work methods in research from the first semester in a structured way. PhD students support the learning process as role models and experts and provide individual feedback. As part of another project, the lectures and exercises are given an educational overhaul in order to optimise the acquisition of specialist knowledge for students during the challenging initial orientation phase of the degree.
Special features regarding the international orientationFor students who want to distinguish themselves in addition to professional training at the linguistic and personal level, there are a variety of options: The Bachelor’s programme, for example, includes a study variant in which the 5th and 6th semesters are completed in France. Specialist language courses systematically prepare for this exchange. Other stays abroad in Europe or overseas during the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes are individually agreed with the subject advisor and organised via the ERASMUS programmes of the DAAD or through cooperation partners of the research groups.

Special features regarding the equipmentThe technical facilities at the Paderborn Physics Department comprise a clean room which houses state-of-the-art facilities for the manufacture of new materials as well as micro and nanostructures. In optical laboratories there are modern lasers, units for experiments on ultra-fast time scales and quantum optical experiments for the generation and detection of individual photons. In the field of Analysis, we operate laser microscopes, X-ray machines, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopes. There is also a high-performance mainframe computer for numerical simulations.
Support for foundersTecUP is the technology transfer and business start-up centre of the University of Paderborn and offers pitches, talks and workshops in preparation for setting up a business. TechUp also offers ongoing individual advice on organisational questions and networking with partners that are essential for a successful start-up. Separate office space with office equipment and internet access is provided for business founders, who also have the option of access to meeting rooms, e.g. to receive customers and company visitors.
Characteristics of assistance to differently abled personsThe very good staff-student ratio and high level of tolerance among teaching staff allows the individual needs of students who have permanent health impairments to be taken into account. For example, students documented as having text anxiety have been able to take alternative types of examination.
Characteristics of diversity advancementLearning centres like the “Physiktreff” and mentoring programmes offered by the university are specific and individual means of promoting female students. Provisions to help combine family and research work, e.g. loan of mobile playroom, are being encouraged and improved especially within the framework of Collaborative Research Centre TRR 142.
Other special featuresAcademic studies and research are represented by the ‘Centre for Optoelectronics and Photonics Paderborn’ (CeOPP). This includes the production of innovative materials for Optoelectronics and Photonics, the experimental and theoretical investigation of new effects from Quantum Optics and Coherent Optics, as well as the manufacture of nano optic structures and integrated optical circuits. Research into new optic effects and quantum effects up to their application in future information technologies (quantum computers), based on basic physical investigations.
