Special features regarding teachingThe compact physics department in Siegen has around 400 students and 16 lecturers with close contact between students and teaching staff. This ensures excellent support, and the lectures develop the range of lectures for the coming semester jointly with students and the student body. The direct integration into working groups while students write their master’s thesis means that the research results are often published in international journals.

Special features regarding the international orientationThe research of the Department of Physics has a strong international orientation, and all working groups (and thus students working on their Bachelor or Master theses) are involved in international collaborations. Master's course can be completed both in German and in English. There is a programme especially for international Master students in physics, which is supervised by its own coordinator. Furthermore, the Department of Physics participates in the international Master’s programme ‘Nanoscience and Nanotechnology’.

Special features regarding the equipmentThe physics department has an electronics laboratory (development of readout systems), a mechanical workshop (development of detectors) as well as clean rooms and optical an electronics laboratories. The department is also is also represented in accelerator physics laboratories (Helmholtz Centre Berlin), elementary particle physics (CERN, Genf) and X-ray physics (DESY, Hamburg). The department also has an observatory.

Support for foundersThe Connect.US start-up office is the central transfer office at the University of Siegen. It initiates and supports technology and knowledge transfer between science and industry. The team advises students, staff members, scientists and alumni on detailed development and implementation of a start-up idea. In the "Startpunkt57” initiative, the university and regional firms and institutions have joined forces to offer seminars, workshops and financial support.

Characteristics of assistance to differently abled personsProblems with programme selection, progress or completion can be discussed and resolved with the university’s officer for disabled students. The officer supports students with disabilities and/or chronic conditions in preparation for and during their studies and with examination issues.

Characteristics of diversity advancementThe Equal Opportunity Office of the University of Siegen supports the university’s staff members and students in all matters relating to equality. It promotes career development for female doctoral candidates and female junior professors through its FraMeS mentoring for women programme. It also awards grants as transitional funding for female doctoral candidates.
