  • Special features regarding teaching
For the Political Science degree at the Uni Duisburg-Essen, the motto is "the bigger the better". At one of the largest Political Science institutes in Germany, students have the rare chance to take part in programmes covering the full breadth of Political Science topics in small seminars and thus follow their specific interests. In the Bachelor's degree course, this freedom of choice is the main focus in combination with an application-oriented training in the methods of empirical social research. The Master's programmes link subject specialisation with a relation to particular professional fields.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
The department ensures a broad internationalisation offer for all students through a specialised internationalisation office. In addition, international orientation is characteristic of a number of study programmes. This includes the East Asian Studies programmes (including a Bachelor’s programme). The Master of International Relations and Development Policy combines internationalisation with practical relevance. The Master of Development and Governance is an offer aimed at practitioners from developing countries.

  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
The department has a diversity officer who reports to a Vice-Rector for Diversity at university level. The department’s Information and Advisory Centre won the university Diversity Award in 2016 for its commitment to supporting and promoting students with physical or health impairments.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
As with the university as a whole, the institute is also characterised by an above-average level of diversity amongst the students compared with the rest of the country. The institute is integrated fully in the university-wide efforts to further develop diversity management. The extensive guidance and mentoring programme of the institute, with its professional contact persons, has so far proven to be very successful in dealing with diversity.
  • Other special features
The institute has an integrated mentoring system which is intended to ensure an easier start to the course of studies or ensure that the course runs smoothly. The system uses professional course management and guidance, orientation and project weeks, preparatory courses, cross-semester lectures and tutorials.
