Special features regarding teachingOrientation towards a learning objective check list which enables a learning spiral; modern teaching methods (POL, computer-assisted teaching formats, podcasts, amongst others); strong focus on practical experience (training in the student training centre for medical practice and simulation); modern examination methods (OSCE, key feature examinations, e-examinations); innovative evaluation system (honoured in 2014 by the Gesellschaft für Medizinische Ausbildung (Society for Medical Training)).

Arrangements of special exercises at the departmentPractise opportunities for learning practical and communication skills exist in the context of teaching units with simulation patients, in the teaching hospital (incl. teaching practice) and in our SkillsLab (STÄPS). We train lay actors within the framework of a simulation patient programme and specifically train them for patient roles in courses and examinations. The SkillsLab is available for curricular courses as well as for extracurricular peer teaching by 26 students and comprises 12 practice rooms with simulators and 7 seminar rooms.

Special features regarding research activitiesThe research profile of Universitätsmedizin Göttingen (UMG; University Medicine Göttingen) is heavily characterised by the focal areas of the neurosciences and cardiovascular research. The Neuroscience Cluster of Excellence CNMPB is characterised by particularly intensive cooperation between university and non-university institutions of the Göttingen Campus. Both focal areas are funded by the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) as the locations of German health research centres (DZNE, DZHK) and, amongst other things, each is represented by a DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre (CRC 889, CRC SFB 1002).

Other special featuresIn research and teaching, close networking of the clinical-scientific facilities of the University Medical Centre with the natural science faculties of the University (especially biology and psychology, physics, chemistry) as well as the non-university research institutions on the Göttingen Campus. Participation of the Medical Faculty in numerous programmes of the natural science graduate school GAUSS (Georg-August-University School of Science).
