Special features regarding teachingBachelor's degree course: Profiling in the 3rd academic year; development and application of innovative teaching concepts such as research-based learning, close integration of biological and non-biological subject content, early integration into working groups. Lecturers from local research institutions are involved in the teaching programmes. Students may study specialist modules at affiliated or external research institutions. The department participates in several graduate schools and colloquia.
Special features regarding the international orientationAn international focus of all Master' degree courses (English speaking) means that around half of all students are foreign, giving the department a very international flair. The mobility window in the fifth semester of the Bachelor's degree course is intensively used, particularly under the scope of many Erasmus partnerships. Since 2020, more ERASMUS internships have been applied for, which can also be recognised in the subject studies. "Intercultural Work" is a format in the Bachelor for group work consisting of German and international students.
Special features regarding research activitiesThe life sciences explore interactions of biological systems at different levels of organisation (molecule to ecosystem) along two connected pillars: "Marine Ecosystem Research" comprises the bioscientific component of the excellent scientific focus on marine, polar and climate research, including ecology (in close cooperation with the partner institutes ZMT, MPI, AWI and TI); "Synthetic Biology" links the interdisciplinary research of molecular and neurosciences with physics, technomathematics and materials & engineering sciences (cooperation MeVis)
Other special featuresFamily-friendly degree programmes: Students are supported in reconciling their studies with family responsibilities. We offer: A baby’s changing table and box of toys, practicals with alternative times/dates, guidance on individual degree course structure, courses offered between 9:00 and 16:00 if possible, dates set for examinations and practicals early on. Disadvantage compensation, support for international students (for example, extension of time needed for written examinations in German or examinations in English).
