  • Special features regarding teaching
    Joint training of biologists and biochemists in some modules of the biology course; close connection to the computer scientists and bioinformaticians of the university; offers of medicine and institutes (DDZ- German Diabetes Center, Environmental Medicine Research) for students of biology.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    Bachelor Biology International with integrated stay abroad in the USA or Australia (4-year); exchange via Erasmus (e.g.: Norway, Sweden); grants for internships abroad; Bachelor thesis or professional intern ship abroad are possible; support from the International Office.
  • Special features regarding research activities
    HHU is involved in the "Bioeconomy Science Centre" competence centre together with Forschungszentrum Jülich, RWTH Aachen University and the University of Bonn. The Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS) is a joint initiative of the HHU, the University of Cologne (UzK), the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research Cologne (MPIPZ) and the Research Centre Jülich (FZJ). In addition, we cooperate in the field of biology with the German Diabetes Centre, Leibniz Centre for Diabetes Research Düsseldorf (DDZ) and the Institute for Environmental Medicine Research gGmbH Düsseldorf (IUF).
  • Other special features
    Degree course variants that start after the 4th semester: BSc Biology International and Quantitative Biology; close integration with the Research Centre Jülich (focus on structural research, biotechnology, bio-economy (conversion to bio-based forms of economy) close integration with the medical institutes; excellence funding CEPLAS (plant sciences); modern research focus on synthetic biology and systems biology. Both in the bachelor's and master's degree course very large elective range of courses with a wide variety of focal points.
