Special features regarding teachingThe bachelor’s degree in biology combines broad natural science training, including many practicals and excursions, with a specialisation in the final semesters when students can choose specialist biology modules. The subsequent master's degree in biology offers students a wide range of specialist biology modules and research practicals. These focus on physiology, genetics, microbiology, ecology, botany, zoology and evolutionary biology. The degree course is highly research oriented.

Other special featuresThere are wide-spread, but close networks with the other institutes of the faculty and the other natural science faculties and medicine as well as with research institutions: Institute of Plant Biochemistry, Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, Environmental Research Centre, German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research and University Alliance Halle-Jena-Leipzig. The curriculum in the teacher training courses in Biology includes not only subject-specific didactic training but also broad and intensive specialist training.
