Further information provided by the department

  • Special features regarding teaching
The bachelor’s degree in biology combines broad natural science training, including many practicals and excursions, with a specialisation in the final semesters when students can choose specialist biology modules. The subsequent master's degree in biology offers students a wide range of specialist biology modules and research practicals. These focus on physiology, genetics, microbiology, ecology, botany, zoology and evolutionary biology. The degree course is highly research oriented.
  • Other special features
There are wide-spread, but close networks with the other institutes of the faculty and the other natural science faculties and medicine as well as with research institutions: Institute of Plant Biochemistry, Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, Environmental Research Centre, German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research and University Alliance Halle-Jena-Leipzig. The curriculum in the teacher training courses in Biology includes not only subject-specific didactic training but also broad and intensive specialist training.
