Special features regarding teaching
Broad freedom of choice of the entire subject area in the Master of Biology: Aquatic and terrestrial ecology, biodiversity and evolution, molecular physiology and developmental biology, genetics and microbiology, cell biology; very high proportion of practical laboratory exercises throughout the course. It is possible to set your own focus with approx. 50% of the credit points. Due to the wide range of subjects offered, well suited for students who are still looking for their focus.
Special features regarding the international orientation
Biology in Kiel underlines its international orientation through numerous cooperations in research as well as an international course of study MAMBE (Molecular Biology and Evolution), which is taught in English.
Special features regarding research activities
Biology is involved in three research priorities of the DFG: In "Kiel Life Science", research is conducted into the processes by which living organisms react to environmental influences, in "Kiel Marine Science" the ocean system is investigated and in "Kiel Nano, Surface & Interface Science" research is conducted on the nanoscale. Members of the Biology Department head the "Kiel Evolution Centre" in which research is conducted in cooperation with the "Research Centre Borstel", the "MPI for Evolutionary Biology" in Plön, the SFB "Origin and function of metaorganisms" and the Cluster of Excellence "Precision Medicine in chronic Inflammation".
