  • Special features regarding teaching
The internships abroad integrated into the master's degree give the course an important international element. Many master's and PhD students of the international postgraduate schools are originally come from abroad. All working groups therefore have a strong international focus (also because of many international research partnerships, visits abroad, international visitors). Because of the final dissertations and practicals that are produced as part of the different working groups, the students are in constant contact with international scientist(s).
  • Special features regarding the international orientation

  • Special features regarding the equipment
In addition to the modern lab equipment in the various pharmaceutical disciplines which is available to the students, the individual work groups use numerous measuring apparatus for current research projects. This includes, for example, NMR, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, FTIR and VCD for analytical measurements, high-throughput assays for cellular tests or fermenters for biotechnological applications. With the bwGRID there is a large computer cluster available for virtual screening. Modern calorimetric measuring procedures were recently established within the pharmaceutical technology (e.g. ITC).
  • Support for founders
The University of Freiburg has many different ways of supporting business start-ups and promotes continuing education and teaching for qualifications that are relevant to start-ups. The start-up office provides students, doctoral candidates and postdocs with an expert team that can offer competent advice at every stage of starting a business. The start-up office holds regular information events. The departmental start-up officer communicates directly with the start-up office, provides information on current funding programmes and is in direct contact with future business founders.
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
The department aims to make it possible for students with health impairments to participate equally and independently in academic and student life. The support offered is part of the university’s overall service (e.g. specially equipped workspaces for students who are blind or have vision impairment, changes of location if rooms are difficult to access, provision of special assistive devices/technology for students with vision or hearing impairment). A university service and advice centre provides information on possible provisions and help with their implementation.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
With its various service centres and equal opportunity initiatives, the University of Freiburg is actively and permanently committed to creating a working environment that is free from discrimination. The department works actively to achieve these goals. In terms of the gender diversity of the students (and academic staff), it has succeeded (with the proportion of women slightly increased). An international working environment in the research groups facilitates equal treatment, irrespective of cultural origin.
  • Other special features
The subject of Pharmacy combines Natural Sciences with medical topics involving drugs. In the Bachelor's/Master's degree course in Pharmaceutical Science special subject areas such as Bioinformatics or Nanotechnology are taught, amongst others. In the Staatsexamen (state examination) course the identification, production and quality assurance of drugs are the focus. Through the close cooperation of the Pharmacy department with other natural science subjects, inter-disciplinary research in Freiburg has a very high level of importance.
