  • Special features regarding teaching
    We place great emphasis on training our students in quantitative and analytical skills as well as computer modelling with a close practical orientation and early involvement of our students in interdisciplinary research projects. In the M.Sc. degree course we offer a variety of method-oriented field and laboratory practical courses, which can also be chosen in the specialisation area of the B.Sc. degree course. The Department of Planetary Sciences and Remote Sensing offers modules in the field of planetary science that are otherwise taught at only a few universities in Germany.

  • Special features regarding the equipment
    The Institute successfully applies a well-considered combination of first-class analytical research instruments, laboratories and computer flusters installed in-house, the high-performance computing resources of the FU Berlin, and the diverse geoscience infrastructure of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area. The regional competence network Geo-X bundles the geoscientific expertise and analytical infrastructure of four universities and five research institutions and enables their efficient and uncomplicated use.
  • Special features regarding research activities
    At our institute, research projects are ongoing on topics such as paleoclimate and environment, planetary formation, earthquakes, geodynamics and mountain building, as well as water and energy resources. In addition, there are numerous cooperations with other research institutions, including a DFG Collaborative Research Centre, a DFG Priority Programme and other joint projects. The regional competence network Geo-X bundles the expertise of nine universities and research institutions and offers excellent opportunities for student internships and involvement in cutting-edge geoscientific research.
  • Support for founders
    The FU's Profund Innovation service supports students, scientists and alumni in developing application ideas for their research, founding start-ups and spin-offs, and exploiting research results together with established companies. This includes advice on ideas and support for projects, the provision of contacts to companies and partners as well as a range of seminars and workshops.
  • Other special features
    Our institute at the Berlin Lankwitz campus combines future-oriented research and innovative teaching. We view the earth as an interconnected system and have based the education of our students largely on interdisciplinary project work. Worldwide field excursions, exciting laboratory practicals and field measurements, as well as applications of modern software tools provide variety in the studies. Our green GeoCampus with its own library and cafeteria offers a pleasant, social and productive learning atmosphere with close links to fellow students and current research.
