Special features regarding teachingThe department works on research projects around the world, which the students are involved in (see international orientation). Close link between research and teaching; Students are gradually introduced to the institute’s research interests. Integration of theoretical and practical phases via high proportion of project work. Optimum support structure with 2 study career managers (human geography + physical geography). Wide range of field trips on offer. An extensive ERASMUS programme with 29 partner universities gives students a wide range of options for stays abroad. Assistant professors with experience in practice.
Special features regarding the international orientationThe department works on research projects worldwide, involving students and international researchers. An extensive ERASMUS programme with 29 partner universities contributes to internationalisation. International work placements are promoted. In addition, many international researchers work as part of scholarships and fellowships. The department also organises international summer schools for researchers and students, such as ‘DAAD GeoTraining’, in which 30 international students and postgraduates take part each year.

Support for foundersThe Department of Geosciences/Geography cooperates closely with the Goethe-Unibator (Goethe University incubator), which supports graduates and academic staff on the transition into self-employment. The Goethe-Unibator provides support to students and staff members of the university who are seeking to turn knowledge gained in their studies and resulting ideas into marketable products and services and start their own business on that basis. The university thus has a vibrant and well-established culture of entrepreneurship.
Characteristics of assistance to differently abled personsOn our website www.geostud.de, the Geography degree portal at Frankfurt, in the section on accessible education, we provide information on all means of support available to students with permanent health impairments. The guideline on studying with disabilities (“Studieren mit Behinderungen”) is an important instrument in this area. The students also receive individual advice and support in all matters relating to organising their studies, including possible reasonable adjustments for examinations or hardship applications.
Characteristics of diversity advancementIn its efforts to improve research and teaching, the Department of Geosciences/Geography is committed to the advancement of women, gender equality, increasing diversity and reducing discrimination. The department strives to increase the proportion of women among its postdocs and holding professorships. Support is available for fathers working in the department. Improved conditions for students with health impairments are being developed. The department has drawn up an equal opportunity plan for 2017-2022 and the Gender Equality and Action Plan 2015-2017.
