Special features regarding teachingBiology (B): 1.-4. Interdisciplinary teaching in the 5th-6th semester: Focus on molecular biology topics in teaching and methods; English as a compulsory module (acquisition of competence in the specialist language); ILS (B and M): interdisciplinary training; interdisciplinary modules; Master's degree in English; Cell and Molecular Biology (M): research-oriented training in molecular biology; small group sizes; UNIcert III (English as a key qualification). Integrated Immunology: basic and clinical-translational teaching; problem-oriented learning; research-oriented, interdisciplinary.
Special features regarding the international orientationWith Integrated Life Sciences and Integrated Immunology, two international, English-language Master's degree courses are available. In the elite Integrated Immunology degree course, a semester abroad is also an integral part of the curriculum. Partnerships with foreign universities (e.g. Erasmus partnerships) are open to students for individually organised exchange semesters.
Special features regarding research activitiesThe main research areas of biology at FAU are 1) signal transduction and differentiation; 2) immunity and infection biology; 3) membrane biology. In priority 2), the DFG-funded Transregio 130: B cells: Immunity and autoimmunity. Research groups from the Department of Biology also participate in research networks in the fields of neurobiology (GRK 2162), inflammation (SFB 1181) and plant biotechnology. A research network in the field of membrane biology is currently in preparation.
Other special featuresThe department cooperates closely with medicine and the departments of physics, mathematics and chemistry. Master students in cell and molecular biology can choose modules from medicine (immunology, virology, human genetics).
