  • Special features regarding teaching
In teaching, there is close communication between teaching staff and students, between sports practice and theory and between all teaching and research areas, which ensures the best possible transfer of knowledge for students, including with respect to the relevant fields of school sports as well as competitive sports, leisure sport and health-centred sport.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
In 2017, the faculty hosted the world’s largest international congress for sports science (ECSS Congress Metropolis Ruhr) with almost 3,000 participants. Students were involved in the organisation in a variety of ways (in particular sports management), gained experience as volunteers and had the opportunity to present their own research results to the international specialist community. Starting with the 2018/2019 winter semester, the English-language MA programme ‘Sport, Exercise & Health Sciences’ will be offered, leading to a significant internationalisation of the entire faculty.
  • Exchange universities for stay abroads
Universität Wien (AT), Università degli Studi di Napoli 'Parthenope' (IT), Università degli Studi di Torino (IT), Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego w Katowicach (PL), Universitatea din Craiova (RO), Univerza v Ljubljani (SI), Universidad Miguel Hernandez de Elche (ES), Akdeniz Üniversitesi (TR), University of Queensland (AUS), Universidad de León (ES)
  • Special features regarding the equipment
The equipment of the sports facilities meets the latest requirements and permits teaching and practice-relevant research at the highest level. Sports equipment and audiovisual media, such as music equipment, projectors, ceiling cameras, etc., are always in line with current requirements and added to in line with requirements. All facilities can be used for competitions in accordance with association guidelines and for presentation events. Seminar rooms which are equipped with state-of-the-art technology are attached to the facilities and support the close linking of theory and practice, which characterises Sports Science in Bochum.
  • Support for founders
RUB offers students of all disciplines advice on business start-ups through its Career Service. The GründerCampus Ruhr – as a joint project of the RUB, Bochum University of Applied Sciences, rubitec GmbH and the IHK – offers assistance to those from the two major higher education institutions in Bochum who are interested in setting up a business. The MA programme Management & Consulting in Sport also offers a series of courses and events relating to self-employment and business start-ups.
  • Characteristics of assistance to differently abled persons
Individual advice and guidance are available for students with permanent health impairments.
  • Characteristics of diversity advancement
RUB’s motto is: People-centred-Cosmopolitan-High-performance. The faculty is also committed to these values. The academic programmes are available to students from all over the world. The new M.Sc. in English will especially help to increase diversity. A colleague from Australia currently holds one of the research associate posts. An Iranian refugee with a background in sports science has also received a 3-year employment contract with the support of the RUB Centre. A transgender student has written a paper on the gender issue.
  • Other special features
At regular intervals, national and international conferences and congresses are organised at the Faculty of Sports Science. Among other things, the world’s largest sports science congress 2017 was organised under the umbrella of the European College of Sports Science (ECSS) by the Faculty together with the sports science institutions of the TU Dortmund and University of Duisburg/Essen (‘Sport Science in a Metropolitan Area’). There is traditionally an excellent relationship between the students and the teachers as well as the other members of the faculty.
