Special features regarding teachingFlexible, international, digital, interdisciplinary (see the univ. statement on its teaching mission) form the core concepts on which the development of the programme is based. The aim is to give our students an opportunity to customise their studies. The modularisation concept of the C&B department is based on two basic principles, which in practice are advantageous for enabling the pursuit of natural sciences degree courses: Teaching disciplines in parallel, not sequentially (disciplines are not considered in isolation) and review during the semester.
-
Special features regarding the international orientationThe rate of students of the Department of Chemistry & Biology who complete an integrated stay abroad is consistently high (approx. 70% for the two degree programmes considered). In addition to the foreign partner network, language courses and scholarship advice and counselling (including ERASMUS, PROMOS) complement the offer. Research in the faculty has a special international reputation through the topics of ‘Water as resource’ and ‘Aquatic ecosystems’. The department offers an English-speaking Master’s degree (Bioanalytical Chemistry & Pharmaceutical Analysis) (also suitable for international students).
-
Special features regarding the equipmentDevices and laboratory equipment are unique for an application-oriented university, as is the application expertise. The equipment fleet largely been built up through funding and via cooperation partners and is used in teaching as well as research. HSF has increasingly invested in electronic media (online library) in recent years. The libraries available to all students at all locations are also designed as reference and/or lending libraries.
-
Special features regarding research and developmentThe Department of Chemistry & Biology focuses on 5 research areas: Water analysis, trace analysis, food analysis, structural analysis as well as the field of bioanalytics/biomedicine. In the field of ‘water’ – especially in combination with trace analysis and structural analysis – the department has internationally recognised competence. Key areas at a glance: Organic trace substances in the aquatic environment/in other matrices; Identification/ characterisation of disease-relevant biomolecules; Microplastics; Food analysis and safety.

As the ranking is done for the whole subject area, for the single "sub-subjects" it can happen that not all rank groups are represented in all criteria.
