  • Special features regarding teaching
    Modern and thematically current teaching materials; Application-oriented teaching of specialist content; Various examination forms; Practicals in laboratories and field experiments in small groups; Various subjects well-networked among themselves; Technical English in small groups; Practical relevance, involvement of professional practitioners; Availability of the teachers also outside of teaching/consultation hours. Towards the end of their degree programmes, students will complete a practical semester. Each student concludes a supervision agreement with a professor at HRW.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
    HRW currently cooperates with 27 foreign universities and is actively growing its network of international partnerships. The European Union’s Erasmus+ programme is an important foundation, particularly for university cooperation in Europe. There are also opportunities for international virtual learning, by way of an alternative to a semester abroad, offered as part of the ‘HAW International’ programme. The International Office is the central point of contact in this connection.
  • Special features regarding the equipment
    State-of-the-art lecture theatres (new building), laboratories and testing halls, for example, concrete technology laboratory, steel-girder testing hall with welding workstations for students, blower door test; PC lecture theatres with specialist software.
  • Special features regarding research and development
    The focus, both in terms of teaching and application-oriented research, will be in the field of Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Building as well as in Industrial Engineering: Buildings of the energy sector; Energy-Efficient Building; Maintenance; Water Management; Construction Management; Soil-Structure Interaction Since 2018, the HRW research seminar has been held every semester at the Institut für Bauingenieurwesen. The aim of this format is the regular exchange of professors and research assistants on current research topics.
  • Support for founders
    The Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences has been a prizewinner in the BMWi competition on EXIST Potentials since mid-2020 with its HRWStartUps project. Thus, founders, and those who still want to become entrepreneurs, can be supported more effectively to qualify with the topic of Entrepreneurship through workshops (HRWEducate) and to take advantage of guidance & mentoring by start-up scouts and start-up officers.
  • Other special features
    Thanks to their own professional practice, all lecturers are well networked with potential employers and provide students with internships, practical-semester activities or collaborations for the preparation of dissertations. An industrial advisory board also systematically incorporates experience and ideas from industry. In addition to the discussion of practical developments relevant to the study programme, excursions and practical lectures are offered and jointly carried out.
