Special features regarding teachingTeaching focuses on the requirements of regional industry and combines the theoretical transfer of knowledge with references to the field and applications. Research makes a continuous contribution towards keeping instruction topical. The approx. 500 m2 of laboratories available for teaching offer test benches for the subject areas of materials engineering, automotive engineering, sensor and actuator technology, product development, manufacturing and assembly. The state-of-the-art laboratory ensures modern teaching in the fields of CAD, CAM, Simulation and Computer Science
-
Special features regarding the international orientationHRW cooperates with 27 foreign universities and is continuing to grow its network. The main foundation is the EU’s Erasmus+ programme. There are also opportunities for international virtual learning, by way of an alternative to a semester abroad, offered as part of the ‘HAW International’ programme. Students’ international orientation is fostered through modules held in English. The International Office is the central point of contact in this connection.
-
Special features regarding the equipmentIn the laboratory of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, test benches for the subject areas of Materials Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Sensor and Actuator Engineering, Product Development, Manufacturing and Assembly are installed in an area of approx. 500 square metres. The state-of-the-art laboratory ensures modern teaching in the fields of CAD, CAM, Simulation and Computer Science.
-
Special features regarding research and developmentCurrent research projects can mainly be found in contract research. The focusses on the following topics: The Formula Student und intelligente Mobilität projects are located in the research topic for vehicle engineering in the Smart City network; The research topic on Digitalisation includes research on usability engineering in the area of virtual reality as well as an IoT laboratory (Internet of Things) taking into account IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things). A total of 19 fully-equipped laboratories for research and development are available.
-
Support for foundersThe Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences has been a prizewinner in the BMWi competition on EXIST Potentials since mid-2020 with its HRWStartUps project. Thus, founders, and those who still want to become founders can be better supported to qualify with the topic of Entrepreneurship through workshops (HRWEducate) and to take advantage of guidance & mentoring. The institute features a start-up scout and two start-up professors for this purpose.
-
Other special featuresStudents of the department are involved in "Formula Student Germany", an international design competition in which student teams from 30 countries from all over the world participate in two classes (combustion engines and electric motors). All teams must comply with the Formula Student rules in the development and implementation phases and are tested in various disciplines.

(ME)= Mechanical Engineering (IntDiscip)= very interdisciplinary and thus not classified;
As the ranking is done for the whole subject area, for the single "sub-subjects" it can happen that not all rank groups are represented in all criteria.
