Special features regarding teachingIn teaching, new teaching and examination formats are continuously tested with university didactics. The focus has always been on project-oriented teaching. Students are favourable towards new forms, such as serious-game, peer-feedback and reflection sheets. The aim of the institute is to adapt its study offers to meet the new requirements of our society and industry, such as the sustainable and ecological transformation that will affect all areas of activity.

Special features regarding the international orientationHRW currently cooperates with 27 foreign universities and is actively growing its network of international partnerships. The European Union’s Erasmus+ programme is an important foundation, particularly for university cooperation in Europe. In addition, opportunities for international virtual learning, as an alternative to a semester abroad, are offered as part of the ‘HAW International’ programme. The International Office is the central point of contact in this connection.

Special features regarding research and developmentThe Institute of Measurement and Sensor Engineering has research and teaching laboratories for measurement technology and automation engineering. The facilities are continuously expanding as part of the industry partnerships and provide a modern platform for collaboration between industry and university. The following research projects are currently underway at the Measurement and Sensor Technology Institute: In-situ photoluminescence, high frequency surgery, tissue diagnostics, non-destructive measurement, non-contact temperature measurement.

Support for foundersThe Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences has been a prizewinner in the BMWi competition on EXIST Potentials since mid-2020 with its HRWStartUps project. Thus, founders, and those who still want to become entrepreneurs, can be supported more effectively to qualify with the topic of Entrepreneurship through workshops (HRWEducate) and to take advantage of guidance & mentoring by start-up scouts and start-up officers.
