Special features regarding the equipmentThe Institute for Geosciences has a powerful transmission electron microscope (TEM), the resolution of which extends down to the molecular level. In addition, the Institute also has a superconducting gravimeter in the form of the Moxa Geodynamic Observatory. Apart from this, the institute has a wide range of analytical facilities at its disposal with X-ray fluorescence, microprobes, diffractometers, mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma and laser ablation, atomic force microscope, electron microscope and two hydrogeochemical labs.

Other special featuresThe Institute for Geosciences at the Universität Jena is a cooperation between the disciplines of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy with strong inter-disciplinary links to Chemistry, Biology, Physics, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI BGC) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). To a large extent, the scientific workgroups can be joined in clusters for highly-competitive joint projects such as excellence initiatives, graduate colleges, Collaborative Research Centres or key focus areas. For years, a focus in the area of Biogeosciences has stood out.
