  • Special features regarding the equipment
    The Institute for Geosciences has a powerful transmission electron microscope (TEM), the resolution of which extends down to the molecular level. In addition, the Institute also has a superconducting gravimeter in the form of the Moxa Geodynamic Observatory. Apart from this, the institute has a wide range of analytical facilities at its disposal with X-ray fluorescence, microprobes, diffractometers, mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma and laser ablation, atomic force microscope, electron microscope and two hydrogeochemical labs.
  • Other special features
    The Institute for Geosciences at the Universität Jena is a cooperation between the disciplines of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy with strong inter-disciplinary links to Chemistry, Biology, Physics, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI BGC) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). To a large extent, the scientific workgroups can be joined in clusters for highly-competitive joint projects such as excellence initiatives, graduate colleges, Collaborative Research Centres or key focus areas. For years, a focus in the area of Biogeosciences has stood out.
