Special features regarding teachingSelected modules (e.g. nanomaterials, bionanotechnology) are structured by several lecturers as lecture series. On the one hand, this is consistent with the interdisciplinary character of these subject areas and, on the other, gives students the opportunity to structure the knowledge and skills they gain as broadly as possible in terms of subject (e.g. chemistry, biology, physics) and thus productively and sustainable. In addition, almost all modules are offered in conjunction with an accompanying laboratory practical. Lab automation is also used.
-
Special features regarding the international orientationThe department offers the possibility of completing a practical semester abroad or a period of study abroad at a partner university, e.g. Sweden, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Lithuania as well as Switzerland and Namibia. Students are informed about and motivated to participate in stays abroad in regular events and an open house in the International Office. The department is very interested in initiating other partnerships abroad and has continual exchange with foreign higher education institutions and research institutes through the international representative.
-
Special features regarding the equipmentThe technical equipment is based on the requirements of modern industry-related research and enables practically oriented training. The interdisciplinary laboratories have, e.g. DNA sequencers, laser scanning microscope, Zeta sizer, Master's sizer, xCElligence system for automated biocompatibility test, atomic force microscope, ultrasound payer thickness measurement unit, atom absorption spectrometer, fluorescence light microscope.
-
Special features regarding research and developmentThe research projects are characterised by strong practical relevance and intensive cooperation with industry, especially with medium-sized companies. Research in the field of biomedical technology, implants, materials science, nanomaterials, toxicity of nanoobjects, functionalisation of nanoparticles, corrosion protection, biomedical image processing and evolution algorithms keeps the curriculum current and provides interesting fields of work for the students within the framework of projects and theses.
-
Other special featuresClose cooperation with the industry initiative "Gesundheitswirtschaft Südwestfalen e.V.", GETEON.org. The Life Science Analytics course of study features cooperation with a variety of vocational colleges. Graduates with a BTA academic degree can join at a higher semester.

(BT)= Biotechnology (IntDiscip)= very interdisciplinary and thus not classified;
As the ranking is done for the whole subject area, for the single "sub-subjects" it can happen that not all rank groups are represented in all criteria.
