Special features regarding teachingThe range of courses at the institute are based on an understanding of political science as a “practical science”. Each semester, around 30 teaching posts are allocated mostly to sociologists and political scientists in professional practice to broaden the range of offers in the courses "politics and society" and “political science". The practical part of the B.A. teaches career-relevant key qualifications. A four- to six-week mandatory elective practical is a core part of the "Politics and Society” B.A. and of the master's degree in "Political Science".
Special features regarding the international orientationThe Institute of Political Science and Sociology supports students in the use of existing opportunities for studying abroad (e.g., Erasmus programme) or completing internships abroad (e.g., through DAAD). Points of contact for this are, for example, the existing chair-related partnerships with partner universities (such as Warsaw, Wroclaw, Paris, Strasbourg, Ottawa, Tbilisi). The universities of Warsaw, Wroclaw, Paris and Strasbourg host regular trilateral summer schools. The credits earned there are recognised for the Bonn study programme.
Exchange universities for stay abroadsUniversität Birmingham, K; IEP Paris, Frankreich; Paris-Sorbonne, Frankreich; IEP Toulouse, Frankreich; Universität Leiden, Niederlande; Universität Warschau, Polen; Universität Krakau, Polen; Karlsuniversität Prag, Tschechische Republik; Södertörn Universität, Schweden; Corvinus Universität Budapest, Ungarn;
Characteristics of assistance to differently abled personsThe institute has been cooperating closely with the officer for students with disabilities or chronic conditions of the University of Bonn for many years. The institute has provided a ramp for wheelchair users to make its large seminar room accessible. Any events scheduled for rooms in the university’s main building that are difficult to reach are also moved to suitable locations. Cooperation works well in the university’s room management. Reasonable adjustments for examinations are guaranteed.
Characteristics of diversity advancementStudents with a migrant background/foreign students, students with children, students with disabilities or chronic conditions and students with differing prior education find an initial and easily accessible (consultation hours, individual appointments, e-mail) point of contact in the institute’s mentoring service. The institute has been supporting integration of refugees in higher education through its FdIS programme since the summer semester 2016.
Other special featuresOn the one hand, Political Science represents the breadth of classical fields of Political Science in the BA subjects ‘Politics and Society’ and in the Master of ‘Political Science’. On the other hand, it can draw on the special status of the Bonn research tradition, which combines historical and institutional research perspectives with a practical analysis of actual political processes. With the location of Bonn as the second political centre of German politics, the graduates are highly connected to the professional practice.
