  • Special features regarding teaching
The degree courses in the department are characterised by a high proportion of activating forms of teaching and student mentoring programmes are an integral part of the curriculum. Project seminars with open-ended statements of the problem have a long tradition in the department. Following refurbishment of various institute buildings, the department has approx. 1,000 m² of space for student study centres. Over 200 computer workstations for students with design and simulation software are available at the department; a MATLAB/Simulink campus licence is available in 2020.
  • Special features regarding the international orientation
The department has links with a large number of universities in Europe and elsewhere. Students can choose between double degrees and 1- or 2-semester stays abroad. Scientists use the lively exchange with their partner institutes to position their research work internationally. The English-language ICE Master´s degree programme makes the department very attractive for international students. Mentoring programmes and individual support help students integrate effectively into the degree system.
  • Special features regarding the equipment
The faculty benefits from a high degree of technical infrastructure which is used for research and teaching. A new high-voltage hall is planned for the Griesheim campus. The department currently has two cleanroom labs in the field of Micro- and Nanotechnology. In addition to the central PC rooms belonging to the university computer centre, the department has three PC rooms and an electronics classroom with an additional 75 spaces. The University and State Library provides access to scientific databases and standards.
  • Special features regarding research activities
The department is one of the three large departments of TU Darmstadt and has a very high proportion of research projects that are externally funded, usually in co-operation with companies. The faculty is responsible for a DFG Collaborative Research Centre and several ERC grants.
  • Support for founders
TU Darmstadt cooperates very closely with the Innovation and Start-Up Centre. In recent years, five start-ups have been established through the department alone. Students have entrepreneurship modules available to them as part of the curriculum.
  • Other special features
The central location of Technical University of Darmstadt in the Rhine-Main area and the central location of the department in the centre of Darmstadt lead to outstanding accessibility in comparison with other sites. In recent years, the Technical University of Darmstadt has carried out comprehensive renovation measures, which have significantly improved study conditions.
