Special features regarding the library
Kiel university library consists of the main library (with 3 departments.: the main department and two subject-specific departments for Medicine and Engineering) and 43 special libraries in the institutes (about 4.7 million volumes, 5,000 print and 34,300 electronic journals); Since 1.1.2016 the university library supervises the specialist information service "Northern Europe" (DFG-funded); The following specialist libraries are important on site: German German Central Library for Economics, Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research. more information
Foreign language courses
There is a foreign language centre. Arabic, Chinese, Danish, German as a Foreign Language, English, Finnish, French, Galician, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Catalan, Korean, Latin, Nepali, Modern Greek, Low German, Dutch, North Frisian (Fering), North Frisian (Mooring), Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Spanish, Czech, Turkish. The Centre for Linguistics (ZfS) organises language courses that are offered to students in all disciplines. more information
Special features regarding university sports
The university offers its own sports programme. Participation is subject to fees. The programme is open to: FH Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design, Kiel. Students attending the institution can participate in the FH Kiel sports programme. Facilities include one of the largest university sailing centres in Germany in Kiel-Schilksee. A cooperation agreement is in place with the operator of a nearby fitness centre, which enables students at the institutes listed to take part in fitness sports at affordable rates. With a climbing area of 350 m², the university sports programme runs the largest climbing facility in Kiel and the surrounding area. Otherwise, the course benefits from its diversity in a unique sports centre for university sports, the sports forum of the CAU with 7 halls including swimming pool and catering under one roof. more information
